Marking Safeguarding Sunday 2024

On 17 November, churches across the Diocese of Bristol will mark Safeguarding Sunday, a day to reflect on safeguarding’s importance, remember survivors of abuse, and recommit to creating safe and welcoming communities.

The Diocese of Bristol’s recent INEQE independent safeguarding audit highlighted the dedication of Parish Safeguarding Officers and diocesan safeguarding teams. Their work ensures safeguarding remains central to the Church’s mission. The full audit report is available here: INEQE Independent Safeguarding Audit.

This year, the Makin Report has drawn attention to the devastating, lifelong impact of abuse and the Church’s failures to act. The Bishop of Bristol has acknowledged these failures with deep regret and apologised to survivors:

“I apologise to those who have suffered and continue to suffer, and I remain committed to addressing these issues. … For my part, I will continue working to ensure that anyone experiencing abuse feels safe to come forward, knowing they will be believed, supported, and that their concerns will be acted upon.”

You can read the full statement here: Keith Makin Report – Statement by the Bishop of Bristol.

We remember and pray for all survivors and acknowledge the critical role played by Parish Safeguarding Officers, churchwardens and other parish volunteers in making the Church a safe place.

Resources from Thirtyone:eight are available to help churches participate in this important day. Visit Safeguarding Sunday Resources for prayers, service ideas, and awareness materials. You can also use these suggested prayers in your services this Sunday.
