Godparents' Sunday

The first ever Sunday to celebrate the unique role of godparents will take place on 1 May 2016.

This is a great opportunity to invite recent baptism families to come along with godparents to a special service, but is also a chance to get all those in the congregation who are godparents or godchildren involved too.

Godparents Sunday is a response to research undertaken on behalf of Archbishops Council looking at parents real experiences and expectations around the baptism of their child. One of the biggest findings of the research was that godparents really, really matter to families. In fact, 91 percent of parents gave having godparents as a reason for wanting to have their child baptized at a christening. Godparents are part of family life for all the years ahead, a relationship that will last into adulthood and beyond.

So setting apart a Sunday to celebrate and pray for this special relationship is a great opportunity to share with families and ask for God's blessing on godparents and godchildren everywhere.

A selection of printed resources, downloads, liturgy and more to help create a really special event can be found on the Church of England website.

If you are running any special events, please do use the hashtag #GodparentSunday to share your stories and photos.
