Three New Area Deans Commissioned in the Diocese of Bristol

The Diocese of Bristol is delighted to share that the Revd Kat Campion-Spall, the Revd Marc Terry and the Revd Sarah Hancox were commissioned as Area Deans for Bristol City, Chippenham and Bristol South respectively.

Kat was commissioned as Co-Area Dean for Bristol City Deanery by the Rt Revd Vivienne Faull, Bishop of Bristol, at Hillside House on 22 January. Marc was commissioned for Chippenham Deanery by the Ven Christopher Bryan, Archdeacon of Malmesbury, at St Peter’s Church, Chippenham, on 29 January. Sarah was commissioned for Bristol South by the Rt Revd Neil Warwick, Bishop of Swindon, at Bishop’s Chapel, Winterbourne, on 5 February.

Bishop Viv said: “Each of these new Area Deans brings a deep understanding of their communities and a heart for ministry in very different contexts, reflecting the rich variety of ministry across our diocese. I am deeply grateful for their willingness to serve at this pivotal moment and we all look forward to seeing the impact of their ministry.”

Kat said: “I am delighted to have been called to serve alongside Lizzie as Co Area Dean in this diverse and vibrant Deanery with so many different churches and communities.  It is more important than ever for our churches to work together as we share God’s love in our communities, and I hope that as Co Area Dean I will be able to help facilitate that, and to support and encourage our parishes and clergy as we serve God together in the City of Bristol.”

Marc said: “I'm looking forward to being Area Dean for Chippenham and helping the parishes across the deanery support and share together in brave new ways that help us transform our communities with the gospel.  I'm following Sally who is much loved and has given so much time to the role.”

Sarah said: "I'm really looking forward to being Area Dean for Bristol South, helping to support and encourage our clergy and parishes. God is doing some exciting things in Bristol South Deanery, and together we can support each other through times of challenge, pray and discern ways forward, and also celebrate God's blessings and joys with one another."

Revd Kat Campion-Spall
Kat was ordained in 2010 and joined Bristol Diocese in 2014 after a curacy in Southwark Diocese. She has been Rector of Bristol Harbourside Churches since late 2022. Kat has held various diocesan responsibilities, including serving on Bishop’s Council and as Dean of Women’s Ministry, and she is currently a member of General Synod.

Revd Marc Terry
Marc has served in Bristol Diocese for nearly seven years as Team Rector of Bybrook Benefice, a group of ten rural churches with a strong commitment to their communities. He enjoys helping churches grow in faith and engage with those around them. He has been part of the deanery leadership team for three years and is passionate about the Mission Area Partnership. Before moving to Bristol, Marc was a Mission Priest, exploring new ways of ‘doing church differently’ through reordering projects, church partnerships, and commercial ventures such as Soft Play cafés.

Revd Sarah Hancox
Sarah grew up near Wigan and studied theology at the University of Edinburgh, earning a Bachelor of Divinity degree. After a brief period working in administration, she trained for ministry at Cranmer Hall Theological College, where she completed an MA in Theology & Ministry. She served her curacy in the Diocese of Sheffield and, from 2014, held her first incumbency in Leeds Diocese as Priest-in-Charge, then Team Vicar of St Oswald Methley with Mickletown and St John the Evangelist Oulton with Woodlesford. She joined Bristol Diocese in March 2024 and is currently Priest-in-Charge of St Luke’s Brislington.
