Hundreds turn out for first Big Green Picnic

Picnickers packed up their hampers for the first Big Green Picnic in Bristol this summer.

More than 200 people headed to College Green to tuck into their environmentally-friendly lunches and to hear from speakers.

The Big Green Picnic was a joint event, organised by the Diocese of Bristol and Bristol Cathedral. Among the groups taking part were Greenpeace, Sustrans, Zero Green and City to Sea.

The event featured stalls and activities exploring green issues, as well as featuring speakers sharing thoughts about how people can be more environmentally-friendly.

Following the Dioceses environment conference, The Diocese of Bristol has registered to become an Eco Diocese, an initiative from Christian charity A Rocha, which works for the protection and restoration of the natural world. As part of this the Diocese will be encouraging churches to consider their impact on the environment and participate in the Eco Church scheme.

Ven Michael Johnson, Acting Archdeacon of Bristol, said: We believe that the Earth has been entrusted to us by its Creator, a loving God, and it is a Christian responsibility to care for it.

Our hope is that the Big Green Picnic showed that there are many small things that each of us can do to help protect our planet."
