LLMs are licensed to work with their incumbent in their local benefice. The Work Agreement supports a conversation about their ministry and helps both the LLM and the incumbent to offer expectations and possibilities. The LLM may have a significant Christian presence outside the local church, or may prefer certain types of service. The incumbent may notice gifts that the LLM does not see in themselves. We hope that the conversations, continued over time, will help the LLM, their incumbent, and the wider church to flourish.
The following policies and documents help in particular situations.
Renewal of Licence
Although LLMs’ ‘admission to the office of Reader’ is permanent, the licence needs to be renewed every three years or occasionally more often. To renew a licence:
• The PCC must give their consent to the LLM continuing to minister. This allows the LLM to know that they have the support of the local church.
• The LLM must be up to date with all safeguarding and DBS requirements.
• The LLM and incumbent must approve a work agreement and return this to mmsupport@bristoldiocese.org
Please find templates for the PCC consent form and the work agreement.
Transfer of Licence
The LLM’s admission to the Office of Reader is nationally recognised so can be transferred to another parish or diocese. If an LLM wishes to move parishes (or dioceses), please contact the Warden of Readers through mmsupport@bristoldiocese.org
In a Vacancy
LLMs are often key people during vacancies. This can be a time of challenge but also a time of personal and church growth if approached with prayer and trust in God to guide and provide. For guidance in times of vacancy, please see LLMs in a vacancy and also Flourishing in a Time of Transition.
Expenses
Although LLM ministry is unpaid, LLMs are entitled to claim reasonable expenses. The most recent Expenses Policy and some FAQs may be helpful.
