The Queen's birthday celebrations

Churches across the Diocese of Bristol held parties as they helped to mark the 90th birthday of HM The Queen.

Special services were held on the weekend of 11 and 12 June, alongside events which involved whole communities coming together to celebrate the occasion.

Blooms filled Bristol Cathedral as it held a Flower Festival in honour of the Queen, who is head of the Church of England. More than 30 arrangers had created the displays.

A service on 12 June, attended by the Bishop of Bristol, the Rt Revd Mike Hill, also featured the cutting of a birthday cake using a ceremonial sword.

Pip and Jay Church was one of many churches which created a carnival atmosphere with activities including face painting and a bouncy castle. Many places also offered food - whether it was a picnic or a full barbecue - and live music.

Competitions were also held at the various events, with families at St Mary Radcliffe competing to win a tug-o-war match.

St Peter and St Paul Church in Great Somerford put up a marquee for an afternoon and evening of celebrations.

Christ Church, Downend, celebrated the Queen's Birthday with a community lunch.

St Mary's Fishponds held an afternoon tea, photographic exhibition and a birthday card competition. The cards were made by children from Fishponds CofE academy and displayed over the weekend.

If you have pictures from your church's celebrations of the Queen's 90th birthday, you can send them to Ben Evans, Diocesan Communications Officer, at ben.evans@bristoldiocese.org
