The Diocese of Bristol has today released its Statement of Needs, a comprehensive and prayerfully discerned document outlining the vision, priorities, and aspirations for the next Bishop of Bristol.
Following an extensive consultation involving over 1,200 voices from across the Diocese (including clergy, lay leaders, youth groups, and diverse communities) the Statement of Needs reflects a shared longing for a bishop who is relational, visionary, and rooted in prayer. It sets out the qualities, leadership areas, and strategic challenges that will shape the next phase of episcopal ministry in the Diocese.
The document highlights key themes including:
- ‘Transforming Church. Together’ – the Diocese’s strategic programme for sustainable mission and growth.
- Commitment to inclusion and justice – with a focus on racial justice, environmental sustainability, and ministry in priority communities.
- Support for clergy and lay leaders – including wellbeing, vocations, and leadership development.
- Engagement with children, young people and families – placing intergenerational ministry at the heart of diocesan life.
The Statement also celebrates the Diocese’s rich diversity, its vibrant worshipping communities, and its deep commitment to serving the wider region, from Bristol to Swindon, North Wiltshire to South Gloucestershire.
The Vacancy in See Committee said:
“We are praying for a shepherd after God’s own heart. Someone who will walk closely with our people, lead with courage and compassion, and help us follow Jesus, serve others, and transform communities.”
The Statement of Needs is now available to download via the Vacancy in See consultation page. It will guide the Crown Nominations Commission and wider discernment process as the Diocese seeks its next bishop.
