Nominations open for Diocesan Synod Elections 2024

Nominations for Diocesan Synod Elections are now open and will close on 13 May

Diocesan Synod is the decision-making and governance body for the Diocese of Bristol that consists of clergy and lay members. The current three-year term of Bristol Diocesan Synod ends in July 2024, so a new Synod will be elected.

The elections will take place between 7 and 24 June with nominations open between 22 April to 13 May (noon).

We are currently looking for both clergy and lay members to assist the Bishop in shaping our future direction. We invite interested and engaged individuals from all backgrounds and experiences to help us become an even better Diocese. We believe that our Diocese is made stronger by its diversity and it's essential that our leadership reflects the full range of voices within our community. This is why we are particularly excited to ensure that the next Synod is more inclusive and representative of our Diocese.

Hear from past and present Synod members about why your voice matters and why they stood, to represent their parishes in the video below.

One of the key questions we know people will ask is “Why should I?”.

Here are a few reasons:

  • Make a Difference in Your Community: Serving on the Synod is an opportunity to represent your parish and bring about meaningful change. Whether you're passionate about social justice, pastoral care, or spiritual growth, your contributions can help transform lives and strengthen our faith community.
  • Shape the Future of the Church: The Synod Elections provide an opportunity for individuals like you to play a key role in shaping the future direction of our Diocese and the wider Church of England. Your leadership and vision are essential for guiding the church forward in a changing world as you approve the Diocesan Budget and vote for the next General Synod representatives from Bristol.
  • Empower Others to Stand: By stepping forward as a candidate, you can inspire others to do the same. Your courage and leadership can empower fellow parishioners to get involved and make a positive difference within the church and beyond.
  • Engage in Meaningful Dialogue: Serving on the Synod provides a platform for engaging in meaningful dialogue and discernment around important issues facing our diocese. Your perspective and input are essential for fostering constructive conversations and finding common ground.
  • Leave a Lasting Legacy: Your contributions to the Synod will leave a lasting legacy for future generations. By standing for election and participating in the governance of the church, you can help lay the groundwork for a vibrant and flourishing faith community for years to come.
