Celebrating 50 Years of Ministry: Margaret Williams, a Pioneer for Women

First published 22nd October 2024

There was a celebration on the 20th of October for Margaret Williams of Christ Church Swindon is commemorated an extraordinary milestone - 50 years of Licensed Lay Ministry.

Licensed in 1974, Margaret became the first female Licensed Lay Minister (LLM) in Swindon, breaking new ground in a church that had few female Lay Ministers at the time. Despite the challenges women faced within the Anglican Church, Margaret's sense of calling and her determination, supported by her husband and vicar, led her to complete her training and receive her licence.

With humour and grace, Margaret navigated the early years of being a female minister in what was often a male-dominated space. Recalling moments of doubt from her colleagues, Margaret reflects, “I was once asked, ‘Whose wife, are you?’ When I explained, the questioner said, ‘Well, I don’t know what the Church of England is coming to!’” Yet her pioneering role paved the way for women in ministry, and today, she proudly witnesses the progress with the ordination of women and 3 women bishops, including Bishop Viv.

Margaret's ministry has been defined by her deep care for people, whether it was taking funerals with compassion or telling children stories that brought the parables of Jesus to life in modern ways. Margaret, a headteacher in her paid employment, brought a creative approach to ministry, such as likening the lost sheep to a parent searching for a child in a supermarket, helped make biblical stories relatable to the youngest members of her community. She built bridges between the church and the school where she worked as a headteacher, and later between the church and care homes, where she continues to take services today - often for people younger than herself.

Margaret reflects, “Over the last 50 years, I’ve seen many changes, as it should be. Now is the time for me to make way for the next generation of LLMs.”

Dr Stephanie Hayton, Adviser for Lay Ministry Mission and Ministry Support said:
"Margaret shows the beauty and worth of Licensed Lay Ministry. Her faith encouraged her to serve her community, workplace and church and she is respected widely by those who know her. I am delighted that she has this opportunity to celebrate 50 years of ministry."

Bishop Viv said:
“Margaret Williams has been a true pioneer, dedicating 50 years to ministry at a time when opportunities for formation in liturgical and pastoral ministry were few.  Her courage, faith, and steadfast service have paved the way for many women. The Church is continuing to grow into a more inclusive and just institution, reflecting Christ’s love for all."
