Rhythm of Life - October

The Franciscan Way

The life of St Francis is well known. His deep experience of God led him to believe firmly in God’s protection and provision. He followed literally the words from Christ to ‘give away possessions’ and to ‘build my church’; his was a day-to-day dependence on God’s provision."

Welcome to your tasters for October.

Francis is perhaps best known for his vow of poverty and his deep love for those on the edge of society. Having grown up as a very wealthy young man he was called to renounce wealth to obey Christ. Richenda models for us how the practice of gratitude brings peace and lifts our eyes away from possessions to relationships. Compassion and love for others are one of the key hallmarks of Fransican spirituality. In your journey this month pray that God will open your heart to see those around you as he does. Ask Him to fill you with the same love for all you meet.

So, time to begin.

Experience Franciscan Spiritualiy - a month with Francis:

This month, we shall be looking at Franciscan Mysticism. The story of St Francis (1181-1226) and his immediate companions is probably very familiar to you. His renunciation of parental privilege in favour of a life of begging and caring for the poor is taught and celebrated almost universally:

Doing - Get stuck in

'Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will.' (Romans 12.2 NIV)

Francis chose to live a life of poverty. Identification with the poor and reverence for God's creation were at the heart of his life.

We may not be able to live lives of poverty, but we do not have to be slaves to consumerism. Modern life can be relentless affecting our mental and physical health. Just going to the supermarket confronts us with endless choices. Turning away from consuming reminds us of what is most important. Choosing to live more simply can play a part in breaking unhealthy patterns, making space for God and improving our mental health.

"Hold back nothing of yourselves for yourselves so that He who gives Himself totally to you may receive you totally."

(Francis and Clare: The Complete Works, p.58, Paulist Press)

Here are some things you can try to help you live a simpler life:

Cultivating contentment

Practise generosity

Choose necessity not desire

Finding space for God

Watching - Learning from others

We've asked people to try out some of practices and to share their experiences of how they have helped them to connect with God in new ways:

Richend Milton Dawes was a third order Franciscan and an LLM in the Diocese of Bristol. She went to be with her Lord and Saviour in July 2025. This video was recorded by her before her death. Watch and listen as she describes how practising thankfulness helps her spiritual journey.
