The Pilgrims’ Chapel at Chapel Plaister is a tiny, but unique part of our national heritage. It dates back to the 13th Century and stands beside what in previous times, was the principal route to the south west. This chapel is one of the few remaining examples of road side havens, which would have provided shelter and a place of worship to pilgrims journeying to Glastonbury.
Services are regularly held at Chapel Plaister, usually on the 3rd Sunday of the month at 6.00pm, but with adjustment of the choice of Sunday when it coincides with Christmas or Easter. The form of service varies between sung Evensong and Compline. Leadership rotates between two lay leaders and our non-stipendiary Associate Minister. The post of Rector is currently vacant (August 2025).
The chapel is open for visitors on Wednesdays between 2 and 4pm in the summer months (May - September).
More info on the chapel can be found at Visit Wiltshire and Historic England.
SAFEGUARDING
The parish of Box, of which Chapel Plaister is part, is committed to the safeguarding of children, young people and adults. We follow the House of Bishops guidance and policies and have our own Parish Safeguarding Officer, PSO, who can be contacted via freeman40@btinternet.com. The Diocese of Bristol’s safeguarding pages contain vital links and information including contacts for the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor (DSA) who advise our PSOs. If you are concerned that a child or adult has been harmed or may be at risk of harm please contact the DSA. That is best done by clicking this link Safeguarding - Diocese of Bristol (anglican.org) or by emailing safeguarding@bristoldiocese.org or ring0117 9060100.. If you have immediate concerns about the safety of someone, please contact the police and your local authority Children or Adults Services.
